MIDDLETOWN, NY — On a warm Friday evening at Middletown High School, Donald “DJ” McDonough etched his name into Garden City High School history by winning the 800-meter run at the 2025 NYSPHSAA Class B Track and Field Championships. With a blistering time of 1:51.86, McDonough not only claimed the state title but also became just the third male athlete in Garden City history to win a New York State track and field championship. He joins Henry Thresher (1949) and Robert Thumser (1950).
The race was a showcase of McDonough’s signature strength and strategy. Sitting comfortably through the first lap, he unleashed a powerful final 300 meters to pull away from the pack and cross the finish line with authority, securing a gold medal and a place in Trojan track and field lore.
“DJ has worked for this moment every single day,” said Garden City Head Coach George Dreher. “His commitment, consistency, and belief in the process set him apart. He earned this title, and our whole program is proud of him.”
McDonough’s win marks a monumental achievement for Garden City’s storied track and field program. His performance not only earned him the Class B crown, but he also finished third overall in the entire state federation, competing against the top runners from all classifications.
Known throughout the season as “The Record Breaker,” McDonough consistently reset personal bests and meet records, building momentum with each race. His state title is the latest highlight in a season defined by excellence—and a fitting reward for one of New York’s premier middle-distance runners.
With his historic win, DJ McDonough joins an exclusive group of Garden City athletes who have captured individual state titles in track and field, and his legacy is now firmly written among the all-time greats to wear the maroon and gray.
